The Scout Association Badge Requirements
Scout Swimmers Badges

Notes:

1. You don't have to do Stage 1 before Stage 2, or Stage 2 before 3 and so on, if you think you are a good enough swimmer to do 2, 3, 4 or even 5 straightaway. People have gone straight for Stage 4 and got it! If you're not sure whether you can complete all the requirements for a particular stage, have a go anyway. You'll probably succeed, but even if you don't you'll know what you need to practice for next time.

2. The requirements at all stages are designed as a comprehensive test of both skills and stamina, and are a preparation for situations in which you may find yourself later on in your career in Scouts (baling out of a capsized kayak in open water and getting it, the paddle and yourself safely to the bank, for example.)

Don't forget to look at Dave's FAQs at the end of this page.

Dave's FAQ's for Badger Hill

  1. One length of Flitwick or Biggleswade pools = 25 metres so 200m = 8 lengths, 400m = 16 lengths and so on. You can kick off from the wall on the turns, but no stopping for a rest. Doggy paddle is not an acceptable stroke! On your front Freestyle (also known as front crawl), Breaststroke, Sidestroke and Butterfly are ok, and on your back Backstroke and Old English  Backstroke are ok. If you don't know what this last one is, ask Grandad. It used to be in the Olympics, but was dropped about 50 years ago in favour of Butterfly - it's a very powerful stroke when done properly.
  2. Swimming shorts are ok for treading water and water skills items, but proper trunks, or for girls a swimming costume, are recommended for the distance and/or timed swims if you've got them or can borrow some - loose shorts or "bermudas" make you work significantly harder when you're swimming lengths because of the water drag from the extra material flapping about! That's why lifeguards never wear them!!
  3. Heat Escape Lessening Posture is floating with knees up to chest, arms round knees, float wedged between chin and knees.
  4. The Olympic record for 100m swimming crawl stroke is under 1 minute, so you've plenty of time on the timed swims!
  5. For item 6 in stages 4 and 5 you can switch between lengths of front and back strokes, so you don't have to swim all your lengths of stroke A  followed by all the lengths of stroke B (or vice versa) The person counting will note what stroke you've used on each length, as long as it totals up to the required number of  lengths of the required strokes at the end.
  6. The tests don't have to be done in the order above, most people prefer a bit of a warm-up, get the distance and timed stuff over with while you're still fresh, and then do the floating, diving etc to finish. It's your choice on the day!
  7. If you're not sure you can do everything, have a go anyway. You'll probably surprise yourself and do it all, but even if you don't, you will have proved what you can do and what you can't and you will know exactly what to practice before your next attempt. No-one so far has needed more than two attempts to do even stage 5!
