BADGER HILL SCOUT GROUP MINIBUSES

Badger Hill Scout Group now has two minibuses, both high-roof LDV, 17-seaters and both in Scout livery (see the pictures below).

We acquired the blue bus in November 2007 to replace our old minibus which terminally failed its MOT in great style in 2006 and we were fortunate enough to receive a grant from Maulden Parish Council to help us fund the purchase of the white minibus in November 2008. We are looking forward to using both buses to get out and about as part of the Scouting Programme.

Obviously the primary use is by the various sections at Badger Hill, but when they are not being used by us, they are available to other local Scout and Guide groups, and to other organisations such as clubs and schools in return for a donation. We supply the bus with a full tank of diesel and we ask you to return it full.

Seat belts are fitted to all seats, and they are fully insured including a recovery service. Our insurance requires that all drivers must hold a full licence and be over 21 years old, but you also need endorsement D1 on your licence which ceased to be an automatic part of licences about 13 years ago. It's unlikely that anyone who has taken their driving test since 1997 will have a D1 licence unless they've also taken the separate driving test for larger vehicles.

Badger Hill Scout Group has MiDAS membership therefore all Group drivers are expected to have MiDAS certificate (up to date) and to observe MiDAS recommended best practice in all aspects including rest periods and relief drivers. We strongly recommend that other drivers should have this training particularly if you're carrying young people as it is rapidly becoming compulsory for school teachers, youth group leaders, and the like who drive minibuses. If you have a Midas certificate please bring it with you, and we will want to see the paper version of your licence.

The white bus is fitted with a towbar (the blue one isn’t yet) so a trailer can be legally towed as long as the side door is available as a means of emergency exit and the legal requirements on Gross Train Weights, etc , and the towbar manufacturer's recommendations on towbar down-force weights are followed. From practical experience we've found that towing a trailer with a  minibus when it's also carrying a full or nearly full load of passengers is not good for either the driver or the bus so we suggest you put some passengers in another vehicle or tow the trailer with something else if you're in this situation.

Unfortunately, following expensive damage that occurred when one bus was being used by another group, we do not allow any camp equipment such as tents, cookers, gas cylinders, tables, etc to be carried in the buses and only personal kit such as daysacks and other soft edged items should be inside. The towbar is there for an equipment trailer and although we don't own any ourselves we don't normally have a problem borrowing suitable trailers.

Until this same incident proved otherwise we didn't think it necessary to point this out, but you should never ever carry gas cylinders in a  minibus with passengers aboard! It's also illegal to carry them even when the bus is empty unless there is a "pressurised gas cylinders" sign on the bus to warn the emergency services in the event of any incident, and our buses don't have such signs.

The following is not guaranteed to be 100% up to date, but the buses are already booked on these dates: (1) or (2) indicates whether one or both buses are booked.
