SUBSCRIPTIONS

No subscriptions are due for your child until they are invested which is usually within four to six weeks. You will be provided with a standing order form and Gift Aid declaration which arranges payment of £11.00 monthly to the Beaver account.  There is a Joining fee in addition to subscriptions of £15.00

WAITING LISTS

Please note : We have a very healthy waiting list for all Sections, including Beavers.  We will accept applications for children who have started Foundation and will be 5 years in the current academic year.  If your child is already 5, 6 or 7 years then you can apply immediately.  Please note that applications from children who are 6 or 7 will not automatically go to the top of the list and they may be asked to wait until they are old enough to join cubs.  Please apply to the membership secretary by using our on-line website address www.badgerhillscouts.org.uk

MOBILE PHONES

We need to be able to contact you in an emergency whilst your child is in our care. Please ensure that the numbers we have on file are up to date.  The leader's mobile phones are on in the hut for the whole Beaver Session.

UNIFORM

For the first few weeks we do not expect your child to wear uniform.  Comfortable trousers and sweatshirt with tee shirt underneath (it gets hot when you’re running around) and trainers are fine.  Your child will require uniform for his/her investiture but you will be advised of this nearer the time and will also be invited to the ceremony.  We do keep a small stock of uniform items in the Colony, so do ask a leader what we have before you head for the shops!  Uniform can be bought on-line at Scout shops, John Lewis, & Kick Off sports. There are other suppliers listed in the equipment suppliers section of the Group Guide.

 The Beaver uniform is:

bullet Turquoise Sweatshirt and Polo Shirt
bullet Navy Activity Trousers, which will also be worn later at Cubs - assuming they still fit!
bullet Group scarf and woggle which will be provided by the colony at investiture.
bullet Footwear appropriate to the activity, i.e. trainers for normal evening meetings or outdoors, school shoes or similar for parades.

PARENT HELP

Parent help is much appreciated at meetings, particularly those out of doors when our ratio of adults to Beavers is 1 to 4.  We find that Parents do enjoy the occasional meeting and (most!) children  enjoy having you there.  As most of our Beavers are boys, it is great to have Dad volunteers as well as the mums and we find that they appreciate male role models!.

Our Occasional Parent helpers (4 occasions) complete a form and are CRB checked.

The Group pays a cleaner to clean the hall twice a week.  All our Leaders are unpaid volunteers and are fully CRB cleared.

SUMMER GRASS CUTTING

We would love you to offer to cut the grass.  You can stay during the Beaver session and do this if we are not in the garden.  This worked really well last year and the children love being able to go outside and use the grassed area.  Please just ask us for the mower when you arrive.  We do make a note of parents who help in this way as it is one of the things we ask for help with as part of your support to the Group when your child joins.

PROGRAMME

In each half term we aim to complete challenges that enable the Beavers to achieve their Challenge and Activity badges.  The programme is balanced and varied and we promote fun and adventurous outdoor activities, visits to places in the Community, Fitness and co-operative games, international and cultural themes, arts and craft, campfire singing and cooking.

We recognise seasonal events and expect to see the Beavers at St George’s Day in April,  Remembrance Day in November and the Group Carol Concert in December. We aim to provide Beavers with a Nights away and Hike experience during their 2 years as a Beaver Scout although we cannot guarantee to offer these experiences every year.

We traditionally take Beavers (free of charge) to the Milton Keynes Pantomime in December.

If you or your child have any comments or suggestions to make please feel free to speak to any of the leaders.

INTO THE FUTURE  We are lucky enough to have 2 Beaver Colonies at Badger Hill and we would like to be able to keep both Colonies open to offer Scouting to as many local children as possible.  We are dependent on the time and goodwill (and stamina) of the Beaver Leaders and Assistants to keep the Movement fun and fresh.  If you are reading this and could spare a little (or a lot) of time to get involved with meetings, outings, treasury or other helpful jobs, then please contact any member of the team and we would love to discuss opportunities with you.

GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT BADGER HILL BEAVER SCOUTS

Badger Hill Beaver Colony was started in 1999, shortly after  Pulloxhill and Houghton Conquest Scout Groups amalgamated under the new name of Badger Hill  and moved to the Maulden HQ.

The Beaver Scout Promise:

I promise to do my best to be kind and helpful and to love God.

The Beaver Scout Motto

Fun and Friends

The motto sums up the approach very neatly, in that it is an introduction to Scouting at a gentle pace suited to 6-8 year olds. Beavers do some Scouting activities such as Camp Fires, short hikes, and day visits to Cub Camps, but there is no overnight camping under canvas at this stage. Activities are carefully controlled to make sure they do not overstretch this age group, but are enough to give a taste of what is to come later.

Due to legal restrictions, it is not possible for someone to join Beavers before their sixth birthday, but we can have flexibility over when they move on to Cubs.

For full details of the various Beaver Badges and the requirements for attaining them, go to: http://www.scouts.org.uk which is the official web site of the UK Scout Association. The site contains an enormous amount of information about Scouting in the UK, together with links to other UK sites (like this one), and world-wide to the 148 countries where Scouting is active. We don't put these details on this site because Scouts.org.uk will always have the most up-to-date information.

BEAVER SCOUTS BEHAVIOUR POLICY

The motto for Beavers is ‘Fun and Friends’.  With 24 Beavers at any one time it is important that everyone, children and adults, has a clear view of what behaviour we do not find acceptable as a group and with our promise of ‘I promise to do my best, to be kind and helpful and to love God’ also in mind.

In rewarding kind, helpful, thoughtful, fair, good sport behaviour we give out soft toys to around five Beavers most weeks to reward them for trying hard during the evening.  They are awarded by the leader/helper who represents that toy.  We also have ‘Scarfy’ who is awarded for the neatest tied scarf!  We do give out sweets from time to time too!

With regard to unacceptable behaviour, we have a tried and tested system that everyone understands and relates to and really has worked over the past 5 years.

The ‘sitting out’ chair.  Placed strategically and rarely used, it provides somewhere to sit if a Beaver misinterpreted the rules or got a little carried away.  No one is hurt, just unfair conduct.

Reward System:  We operate various award systems to encourage excellence and good behaviour.  The rewards may be instant – E.g. Verbal praise or may be accumulative E.g. points awarded over a number of weeks to win a small trophy or prize, taking home one of the Beaver soft toys for a week, special badges or certificates to recognise achievement or effort.

We expect all the Beavers to complete the required clauses to achieve their badges.  When we complete badges during the meetings, we expect Beavers to participate to their personal best.  If they miss a meeting, generally there will be another opportunity to complete an additional clause.  However 2 or more consecutive meetings missed, could mean that challenges will have to be completed at home.  Activity badges can be completed at home for special interests E.g. Swimmer following discussion with the Beaver Scout Leader.

We are very happy to discuss any concerns you may have with this policy and how it may relate to your child’s involvement in Beavers.

Membership enquiries should initially be made to the Membership Secretary at memsec@badgerhillscouts.org.uk  who has the current position of all sections on numbers and waiting lists. Please put "waiting list" as the subject, and click here for a list of the details  which you will need to include in your email.
