Badger Cub Scout Pack.

Review of Winter term 2005.

As usual our last term has been busy and varied. We started off in September with the Cub Scouts working toward their

Global challenge badges. To meet the requirements for this badge the Cub Scouts found out about the culture of Japan, the scouting in Japan and they even learnt a few words of Japanese. A very frantic chop sticks games showed that many of the Cubs would probably starve in Japan! On another evening they learnt about the work of The Kaira Konko fellowship which supports the work of Scouting in the village of Soma in The Gambia. Akela was lucky enough to have been involved in the fellowship and to visit The Gambia. A slide show and answered questions ensured the Cubs learnt a about the needs of people in another country. To finish our work on the Global challenge we had two evenings on recycling both of which were great fun as well as being informative. Our first home grown session was run by Bagheera and for our second we welcomed a representative from the Bedfordshire county recycling scheme. Her evening included using bins and rubbish with the Cub Scouts charging around depositing the right item in the right bin (most of the time). As always the free gifts at the end of the evening were very welcomed. After working so hard on the Global challenge we had some lighter evening working with recycled material making a giant collage and other items that completed our requirements.

Inspired by the requirement for the District Craft competition we held a fun with food evening. Each six was given a variety of edible items from which they had to create a sand castle. Their efforts were fantastic and the leaders and helpers seemed to enjoy the challenge as much as the Cub Scouts. We did catch King Louis eating some of the sweets though! We were very pleased to welcome Gerry Pope the Assistant County commissioner International and the members of the leadership team for the Bedfordshire county contingency for the 2007 Jamboree. They helped to judge our sandcastles and Gerry presented the Cub Scouts with their Global challenge badges.

We had two evenings based around the collectors badge. The first evening saw the leadership team showing off their many and varied collections to inspire the Cub Scouts to bring in theirs. The collections were great but the leaders did not manage to gain their collectors badges. The second evening saw the Cub Scouts bringing in their own collections which spread from Lego to rocks and from football players to key rings.

King Louis ran a challenge evening near the end of term. This involved the Sixes trying to build the largest tower to support a cup of water and devising a way to power a toy car across the H.Q. floor. This proved to be a great fun evening with some fantastic results at the end.

Our last formal evening was of Christmas crafts. The Cub Scouts all managed with the help of Bagherra and Baloo to produce a decorated Christmas bauble and a Christmas cracker.

Our final evening was a Barbeque Beach party. Uniforms were out and tasteful (and less tasteful) shirts and shorts were the order of the day. There were prizes for best dressed male and female, loudest shirt, and most imaginative costume. The Cubs really rose to the occasion. With Jo our G.S.L. providing burgers and hot dogs and a some silly party games we had a great evening and a fantastic end to 2005 Scouting.

We were very pleased in the last year to welcome new members to our pack. Our new friends are Laura, James, Fred, James, and Kieran. We also welcomed Anthony who transferred from Moles. Another high light was the very moving sixers and seconders ceremony written by Bagheera and conducted in candle light. This ceremony makes becoming a sixer or seconder much more special.

This term saw two special services for the Cub Scouts. The first being the annual Remembrance Sunday service held at the War memorial in Maulden. The Badgers Cub Scouts were all smartly turned out and their behaviour was excellent. There were a lot of very positive comments from members of the village.

The second service was the annual Christmas service held at St. Mary the Virgin, Maulden. The whole group joins together to celebrate Christmas together. At this service we welcomed our new friends swimming up from the Beaver Scout section and the District Commissioner presented some Chief Scout Challenge awards.

In their spare time encouraged by the leaders the Cub Scouts have completed a vast range of badges including, D.I.Y. Swimmer, Musician, chef and book reader.
